As spring begins to bloom across Birmingham, there’s one lesser-known Korean holiday that brings families together over stories, respect, and unique flavours—Hansik (한식), or Cold Food Day.
Falling on the 105th day after the winter solstice usually around early April Hansik is one of Korea’s four major traditional holidays. It’s a time to honour ancestors, reconnect with loved ones, and share dishes that have been part of Korean heritage for centuries.
What Is Hansik?Hansik literally means “cold food,” and it comes from a centuries-old practice where fire use was limited out of respect for ancestral spirits. On this day, families would prepare and enjoy dishes that didn’t require cooking offering them first at ancestral gravesites, then sharing the meal together.
But Hansik isn’t just about the food—it’s about reflection, gratitude, and connection. For many, it’s a moment to pause, remember where we come from, and appreciate those who came before us.
Traditional Hansik DishesWhile most people associate Korean food with sizzling BBQ and bubbling stews, Hansik is all about cooler, prepared dishes that are packed with flavour and meaning. Here are a few classic favourites you might find on a Hansik table:
Why Hansik Still Matters TodayEven though fire restrictions aren’t part of modern life, the message behind Hansik still feels incredibly relevant especially for students and families away from home. It’s about taking time to connect, honour your roots, and share a meal that speaks to your heritage.
Whether you’re Korean or just love Korean food, Hansik is a beautiful excuse to gather with friends, enjoy something chilled and delicious, and learn about a tradition that’s still close to many hearts.
Bringing Hansik to Kimchi in Selly OakWhile we’re all about sizzling BBQ here at Kimchi, we also honour Korean traditions that bring people together. This week, why not try something different? Order one of our cold dishes like Bibimbap served cool, our house Baek Kimchi, or finish your meal with a sweet, cold Sikhye.
Hansik is more than a food holiday it’s a reminder that sometimes, the simplest meals leave the biggest impact.
Celebrate Hansik Your WayYou don’t need to perform ancestral rites to enjoy the spirit of Hansik. Invite your housemates, share a chilled dish, and have a moment of reflection (or just a good laugh over kimchi).
